George Dangerfield considered it was as though ‘their strike [was] some holiday of the soul, long overdue’.95

The strikers immediately turned to the NFWW for assistance and both Mary Macarthur and Marion Phillips of the Women’s Labour League threw themselves into setting up headquarters in the local Labour Institute and ILP base, helping to coordinate the setting up of strike committees, organisation of daily strike meetings and conduct of negotiations with a list of wage demands.96 Macarthur wrote to the press to appeal for donations to support the strikers, while strikers’ public meetings and processions passed through the streets with collecting boxes. Hundreds of pounds were raised, which contributed to the provision of 25,000 loaves of bread, along with sterilised milk, that was distributed daily.97 A strike rally held on 14 August in Southwark Park, at which the speakers included Ben Tillett and Macarthur, attracted an audience of 10,000.
